Michael Kors Fall 2011 Collection

We feel love.

One of the cappers to our week at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week was the sentence, "Tom and Lorenzo, welcome to the American Express Skybox." The night before, we were invited to the highly exclusive skybox to watch the Michael Kors show from some of the best seats in the house, view-wise. Sampling the pain au chocolat, fresh-brewed coffee, and freshly squeezed orange juice, we settled into our cushions (yes, cushions, and you probably have no idea what a revelation they were after a week of running around Lincoln Center in our brand new and not-at-all-broken-in boots), we settled in to watch the spectacle.

And a spectacle it was, with a dozen models at a time, walking two runways in both directions to a classic disco beat of "I Feel Love" and "Native New Yorker," unveiling luxe look after luxe look, seemingly endlessly. By any measure, it's quite a show, and we sighed happily as we nibbled pastries and tweeted. Like a lot of his contemporaries, Kors is feeling that late '70s disco beat. Like Michael Kors, he is boiling it down to its simplest and most classic elements, eschewing some of the grandiosity or grooviness of other designers' forays into the same territory.

This is a world of glamorous urban women in stark black and whites or muted dusty pinks and lavenders. She's well-appointed and she's in a hurry. Men don't have much of a place in this world, and the plumage is all on the ladies' side. Kors is always like that, but it was especially noticeable in this collection, where the menswear never really goes beyond serviceable. The womenswear is gorgeous and luxe, but tempered by the tone-on-tone styling. These are not world-shattering designs and that's never going to be an option with Michael Kors. These are, however, beautiful clothes, indulging in the long lineage and vast references of classic American sportswear. They're covetable because they sell a lifestyle.

Add ImageIncidentally, the folks at the AmEx Skybox were so nice to us that they invited us to stay and watch the Nanette Lepore show, which was starting in a half-hour, so we scored two great shows off one invite. We'll review the Nanette Lepore show soon, kittens. In between shows, they brought in Gail Simmons, who sat in for a Q & A, and then mingled and posed for pictures. They have all the Q & A's from Fashion Week up on their site and some of them are pretty great. Check out Brad Goreski, Joe Zee, and of course, Mr. Tim Gunn:
